3 generations of sauna traditions

1950s – Production of sauna heaters begins

In 1950, company founder Tapani Harvia built the earliest Harvia wood-burning heaters for family and friends. Production of heaters for sale followed in the mid-1950s, with continuously heated models entering production in the late 1950s. Across that decade, the company's annual output averaged approximately 100 heaters.

1980s – Electric sauna heaters introduced

Harvia rose to the global lead in wood-burning heater manufacturing during the 1980s. Meanwhile, rapid urbanization and shifts in Finnish lifestyles drove greater demand for electric sauna heating. By the decade's close, the company was producing electric sauna heaters in addition to its wood-burning models.

HARVIA SAUNA HEATER FAQ

A Wi-Fi-enabled controller lets you switch on your sauna wherever you are. It may be one of the most useful ways to control an appliance over Wi-Fi: start warming the sauna while you’re at the office or on the ski hill, and it can be ready when you arrive home.

Several factors affect warm-up time. With suitable ventilation beneath the heater and high on the opposite sauna wall, most saunas reach temperature in 30-80 minutes. Larger heaters holding more rocks take a little longer because that additional mass needs to warm up. Once heated, however, they retain warmth more readily and restore the sauna’s temperature faster after someone opens the door.

Harvia heaters hold plenty of stones to produce steam, or Loyly. A greater stone mass lets you lower the sauna temperature to around 50 or 60 degrees Celsius, then add plenty of water to bring humidity to 50% or 60%. Aim for a total of 110 when adding the temperature and humidity figures together. Using your sauna as a steam room gives you another way to enjoy it.

A limit of 90 degrees Celsius applies to every sauna heater, including Harvia models.

Every electric Harvia heater needs a 240-volt supply and 30-50 amps. For heaters above 11 kW, a second power line supplying 240 volts may also be necessary.

Yes. Pouring water over the stones is part of how Harvia heaters work, creating steam and raising humidity inside the sauna. The generous quantity of rocks lets you continue adding water to produce as much steam as you prefer. Keep stones over the heating elements to help protect them from direct contact with water.

Yes, in most cases. With only a few exceptions, Harvia heaters have a separate controller. A wood-burning Harvia model does not require one, although you will need a vent kit for that heater.

Included with the Harvia controller are a thermostat, a control screen and the control box where all the wiring connects.

Yes. Your sauna’s particular build determines the vent kit you need. Contact us to discuss the details.
