Where Art
Meets Function
We have been designing and building decks and porches for a long time
now. And we have been lighting them for just about as long. One of the biggest
challenges in deck lighting has been how to light the stairs in a way
that meets the safety requirements and is still attractive. Spot and
flood lights are too glaring, post mounted lights are typically too far
apart, and step lights do not work very well for most wooden stairs.
Then one Sunday afternoon while sitting on the porch, the solution came to us. We call it
DecoRiserTM.
DecoRiserTM
is a decorative riser board with
one or more light units attached to the back of the board. Diffused
light passes through decorative cutouts made in the board by computer controlled
equipment. It operates on safe low voltage current so it is easy to
install and does not require an electrician in most localities.
DecoRiserTM
is currently available in widths suitable for 3' and 4' wide stairs with
three or four stringers. Five patterns are offered now. The system is designed
for new construction, but may be retrofitted for most existing stairs. |

When designing DecoRiserTM,
we wanted a product that not only did a superior job of lighting the
stairway, it had to look great during the day as well. We think that we
succeeded.
Install the
lighting as you build the stairs.
Unlike other systems, DecoRiserTM
allows the builder to build the stairs using
conventional outdoor framing techniques. The DecoRiserTM
installs in the same way as a standard riser board. The
DecoRiserTM board is
trimmed to the appropriate size and fastened to the stingers using the
same fasteners (we recommend screws) used to secure the decking.
The DecoRiserTM board can
be made from most of the same materials already used for riser boards.
We feature and recommend AZEK® Trimboards because the material has very
good working properties, has excellent paint adhesion properties if
desired, and is low maintenance.
The the riser board is sold separately from the light boxes to
give you more flexibility. Want to upgrade the appearance of your
stairs, but do not need the lighting? No problem just buy the risers. Or
you may decide that not all of the cutouts need to be lighted. It's your
choice. |
DecoRiserTM
puts the
light where you need it.

Unlike other stairway lighting fixtures, DecoRiserTM
spreads diffused light over the entire tread in most
applications. Other fixtures create hot spots and shadows which
can be confusing to some people. With our system you see only
the light, not the source of the light so there is no blinding
glare which can be uncomfortable and lead to accidents. DecoRiserTM
provides just enough light to achieve a perfect balance of art
and functionality. |

Our light boxes are fabricated
specifically for DecoRiserTM.
They are made with virgin PVC for long life and outdoor use. We provide
a replaceable 5 watt Xeon lamp with a average rated life of 10,000 hours. The light
box also includes a diffuser lens, connectors, pigtail, and mounting screws. All 3 models are
2" deep and 6" high. This is a low voltage fixture and it requires a
low voltage transformer.

How much
light is enough?
With DecoRiserTM you can
choose how many light boxes you want to install. You really should have
a light on every riser, but it is not necessary to have a light box
behind every cutout. With the 43/3 and the 54/3 models you can choose to
light the center cutout, the two outside cutouts, or all three cutouts.
With the 43/2 model the choice is a little more difficult. Only one is
needed for safety, but for aesthetics, you may want to light both. Or
maybe you light alternate sides - the choice is yours. We offer the
diffuser lens separately to permit lighted and unlit riser cutouts to
appear the same in daylight.
